Detroit Coffee Roasters is home to a growing number of coffee roasters who specialize in buying and selling whole beans. These local shops roast the beans themselves, which helps them achieve a more nuanced flavor than you’ll find at your average chain coffee shop.
The following are some of our favorite coffee roasters in Michigan, many of which also have a retail store or cafe where you can stop by and grab a cup of their delicious brew.
The Art of Small-Batch Roasting at Sabbath Coffee Roasters
Red Dot Coffee is located in a cozy house in Northville and feels like visiting your friend’s coffee shop. They serve a variety of drinks, including coffee by the bag to take home (perfect for the office!). Their iced vanilla lattes are a must-try. They also carry a line of pastries made by Cannelle by Matt Knio. There’s plenty of seating inside, and they’re open later than most other coffee shops in town.
Grand Rapids Coffee Roasters is a small-batch roaster that offers espresso, drip, and filter coffee as well as whole beans to purchase. They offer a wide variety of flavors and pride themselves on their attention to detail, from the quality of the bean to the preparation of the drink. You can visit their roasting facility in Grand Rapids on Saturday morning for a free tasting experience known as “The Saturday Experience.”
Plymouth Coffee Bean Company is the longest-running coffee shop in Michigan, and they know their stuff. They are open later than most of the other coffee shops we’ve visited, making them a great place to stay and work if you need a bit of quiet to focus. Their selection of coffees is wide, and they are especially known for their Ethiopian coffee and a brewed coffee with a hint of caramel.
